Olfactometry Laboratory

The Lennoxville Dairy and Swine Research
and Development Centre is equipped with a highly advanced
olfactometry laboratory.
A unique, dependable and precise research tool,
the laboratory will enable the Centre to find practical and
economical solutions to agricultural odour problems. The laboratory’s
ability to simultaneously accommodate up to six participants
makes it unique. |
The olfactometry laboratory is the ideal
environment for evaluating odours. Environmental conditions
such as temperature, relative humidity, air quality, ventilation
and lighting levels are maintained at optimum levels for performing
olfactometric analysis. |

The olfactometer enables researchers to determine
detection thresholds and relative and comparative odour intensity,
and assess the pleasant or unpleasant nature of a scent.
The olfactometer functions almost entirely
automatically. The operational software:
- presents dilutions to panelists
- performs ongoing results analysis
- devises algorithms for dilution presentations to panelists
- calculates results using several assessment techniques
- stores all relevant data in a database
- prints analysis reports
- assesses panelist performance and sensitivity levels
